12:40 am - Baby-Sitters Club Micro Review 37-38/131

Wow, I'm really bad at keeping up with this project. That said, I'm hoping to put a serious dent in it before the Netflix series (!!!!) premieres July 3. There's no way I could finish even "just" the mainline series with that deadline, but I can do my best to make some progress.

Dawn and the Older Boy. I remember as a kid thinking "Hmm, kinda weird Dawn keeps letting him talk over her," and yeah. Younger me was right! I also liked how the B-plot showed that manipulation can happen with anyone. I also thought Dawn handled it well. And it was a little tactless, but I laughed out loud at Mary Anne's thoughtful letter ending with "PS are you interested in meeting my bf's cousin." (That said: I loved how said bf's cousin and Dawn actually built a strong friendship through writing and sharing ideas!)

Kristy's Secret Admirer. THE RETURN OF COKIE. Also, thank goodness Twitter didn't exist at this point. Cokie would have been more of a villain than she was here. D: This entry was originally posted at https://gingayellow.dreamwidth.org/2111684.html. Please comment there using OpenID.

10:54 pm - Baby-Sitters Club Micro Review 24-36/131

OKAY. It's been awhile since I've done my BSC micro reviews, for various reasons. So... I kinda did some power reviewing for books 24-37. I'm not giving certain novels the time they deserve, I'm sorry! But I'll try to re-visit them later. (And now, I can keep reading BSC books without feeling guilty about not reviewing them lol.)

Cut for length. My opinions of some of the touchier issues in the books as well, ymmv. ) This entry was originally posted at https://gingayellow.dreamwidth.org/2089930.html. Please comment there using OpenID.

08:25 pm - See you... out there

Okay, I'm, um, halfway through "All Good Things..." as I write this post, but! I have finished my TNG re-watch right before Star Trek: Picard airs tomorrow. And yes, I do have short reviews of the remaining seasons.

Season 3: There's a reason why people say this is when the series got good (and aside from the premiere and a few other eps, you could probably start watching here). It's still very utopia, but the characters are acting like human beings now, and "Best of Both Worlds" is a game-changer for the series and media in general.

Season 4: The season where everyone's family shows up! And also Klingons (and I love Klingons, so I'm cool with that). I think this is the season where you can see the longer story-telling you'd eventually see in DS9.

Season 5: tbh not too remarkable overall, but this is also the season with "Inner Light" and Ensign Ro (probably one of the most influential female characters in the series: Kira is famously based off of her, and you see echoes of her in B'Elanna and even Seven of Nine).

Season 6: I agree with the staff that this was probably the strongest season. Lots of good one-shots and arcs. Also, Crusher and Troi both finally get some action-heavy episodes.

Season 7: This season gets some heat because it has some blah eps (the spider Barclay one, for starters). But they were also making DS9, developing Voyager, AND getting reading for the first TNG movie. Something was going to slip, and it was this season. Although, honestly, after watching it again? It's still a good season. The last few eps are uneven quality-wise, but "Pegasus" is a good episode and I love Troi fighting for her promotion. And of course, the finale is amazing. It's frankly the strongest finale the franchise has ever done.

06:51 pm - TNG re-watch, seasons 1 and 2

I'm re-watching TNG. Which isn't too unusual; I've done that since I was an elementary schooler. However, as we approach Star Trek: Picard's premiere (aka the most exciting day of 2020), I want to try something a little different. I've been doing micro reviews for my re-read of the BSC novels (and I will get back to those soon!). I want to do small reviews of each TNG season. This won't be super indepth, but there will be spoilers. I'll do my best to tag anything that might upset people as well. Feel free to ask for lj-cuts and tags as well.

TNG Season 1. )

TNG season 2. )

Anyways, I'm now on season 3, and even if you're only somewhat familiar with TNG, you know this was the Game Changer season. :o I might make a post just reacting to the finale.

10:43 am - The long-awaited and perfectly flawless VLD/Three Houses placement

Hunk: Golden Deer. GOLDEN DEER. Working-class guy who winds up uniting the universe through compassion and service? 100% Golden Deer.

Blue Lions: Allura, Lance. Allura is not as extreme as Dimitri, but she is extremely focused on avenging her family, and has to learn to move beyond the past. Lance is going to be in whatever house Allura is in. And I'm pretty sure they're both jocks, and the Blue Lions are definitely the jock house.

Black Eagles: Pidge and Keith. Shiro is really tricky here, since he's all about working together and making a strong team... but he's also willing to make sacrifices (more himself than others, but still) for the sake of the mission. Either way, wherever Shiro is, he is definitely the Lord, and Keith is D E F I N I T E L Y his retainer.

09:37 am - Sheith fic I will never write

Keith is playing a Fire Emblem game with Shiro as one of the Units, and is working VERY hard to get S Support with him. Readings guides, asking for help from Pidge and Hunk, etc. It takes hard work and some resets, but he finally does it.

But then whaddya know, there's a thunderstorm RIGHT when Keith unlocks S support and bc this is a silly fan fic, Shiro is now a living person and in his living room!!!!! And is in Very Empowered (i.e. scanty) armor!!!!!!!

11:01 am - In case anyone is interested

The Voltron store currently has all 5 Paladin (S3 version, so no Shiro or Coran s2s) posters on sale together for 25 USD. You can also get single posters for 9 USD, along with a back to school 20% off sale.

(It's really tempting to get a Pidge poster rn, I will not lie. I'm missing Coran and the Garrison Trio from my collection.)

10:59 am - BSC Micro Review 23/131

Dawn on the Coast. iirc AMM said she was getting requests for bring Stacey back as soon as she left fot NYC (and might have already been pre-planning Welcome Back, Stacey at this point, but idk), so I'm wondering if she was planting the seeds for Dawn leaving just in case she wanted to re-visit "one sitter lives far away" stories. It's kind of hard to read this knowing Dawn does eventually return to CA, but the conflict felt real and no one was a bad guy, so I still enjoyed the read. I kinda wish we'd seen more of Dawn's dad! I know he shows up in some of the Super Specials, so I guess I have that to look forward to.

(Yes, it's still very far away, but I do hope to read the Super Specials, Mysteries, Super Mysteries, Reader Request, sequel series, and ANYTHING ELSE I HAVE FORGOTTEN.)

12:40 am - BSC Micro Review 22/131

Jessi Ramsey, Pet Sitter. While I like the pets and the conflict between the older BSC members could have been interesting (but since we see it all from Jessi's POV, we don't really get into why the girls are fighting, again), we ultimately get a Jessi novel that imo doesn't really focus on Jessi. I liked her interactions with Becca and how Jackie's desire for a pet/some responsibility was resolved, but those were the tiniest bits of the novel. Most of it was Jessi watching the older girls fight (which tbf if you're in the target audience and only reading some of the books every few months it would seem fresh, but if you're Totally Cool and Rad like me and reading them in a row, it gets repetitive lol). I did like reading AMM's end note about the pets she's had in her life (I did not know Tigger was named after a cat she had).

05:21 pm - BSC Micro Review 21/131

Mallory and the Trouble with Twins. Like with Claudia and the Bad Joke, a baby-sitter (this time Mallory) has to deal with a difficult charge, but I feel like it's more nuanced in this case. Carolyn and Marilyn have a reason to be upset and it explains why they're bratty lol, but they're not (too) terrible about it. And you see them learn how to explain to their mother that they want to be themselves, and they get to do that. Also, Mrs. Arnold is a more fully realized "ott but means well" parent as opposed to Mrs. Sobak. Although Mallory you want to be ~grown up~ but make fun of Mrs. Arnold getting dressed up? Please.

Again, Mallory was/is my favorite so I am biased, but I enjoyed it a lot. Mallory wanting to be more grown up was something that resonated with me as a kid, so I enjoyed watching her solve her problem with her charges, and also logically (and a little craftily--you can tell her dad's a lawyer lol) explain to her mother what she wants, and that she's willing to help pay for it rather than expect the parents of eight kids to give her everything she wants right away.

(It's also why I convinced my Mom to let me pierce my ears when I was 10 lol--Mallory and Jessi were super hyper focused on earrings as a sign of maturity, I did so as well. Of course I let the piercings heal when I was in college because I got tired of them, but that's another post for another time.)

Speaking of earrings, wow, with that finale where Mal and Jessi and Claudia (and Dawn on the spur of the moment) all get their ears pierced... and then Kristy and Mary Anne buy them earrings makes me low-key wonder if the Ear Piercers of America or smth paid Scholastic some advertising money lol.

09:04 pm - BSC Micro Review 20/131

I took a little break from my BSC micro reviews, but I brilliantly got some books at Target today and now my to-read list is even longer, so it's time to make a dent in this part of that list!

Kristy and the Walking Disaster. Sports! I don't know anything about sports, so I wasn't too invested, s2s. Also, this book introduces Bart, Kristy's sometimes love interest and it's very... "wow a boy I guess I'm crushing on him now" that tends to happen in the BSC books lol. I'm glad they called out the bullying going on re: Bart's team but then Kristy was like "well it inspired my team to do better" and I just. Eighties books. Sheesh.

(Also, re-reading these as an adult? You're a lot more sympathetic to Jackie Radowsky now.)
